NRI Certificate 

An NRI Certificate may be issued only to an Indian national holding a valid Indian passport who qualifies as a Non-Resident Indian (NRI) under Section 6 of the Income Tax Act, 1961. A person is considered a resident in India if they were present in India for 182 days or more during the previous financial year, or for 60 days or more in the previous year and 365 days or more during the four preceding years (subject to applicable exceptions under the Income Tax Act). Applicants who do not meet the residency criteria are treated as NRIs and may be eligible for the certificate, with eligibility verified based on their passport travel records and supporting documents. For non Indian passport holders, having OCI card, NRI certificate will be issued only for admission to their family members in India at the Indian University under NRI Quota. 

How to Apply: Download the “Miscellaneous Service Form” and submit along with: 

1.  Self-attested copy of passport (first page and last page); 
2.  Self-attested copy of visa/work permit/residence permit; 
3.  On the basis of the Indian passport held, applicants may submit a list of their entry/exit into/from India to confirm length of total stay in foreign country during a particular financial year (March to April). 
4.  Non-Indian passport holders- Original and 1 copy of passport, Original and 1 copy of OCI card. 
5.  A letter detailing the purpose of requirement for the NRI Certificate.
6.  Proof of Residential address in South Africa/Lesotho.  
7.  Any other document as specified by the Consular Officer 

Note: Please carry originals of all the supporting documents to be presented to the Consular Officer (photocopies of which are to be attached with the application). Applicants will be issued NRI certificate as per High Commission format only.
