(a) The Indian Citizenship Act, 1955, does not provide for dual citizenship. Holding Indian passport or traveling on Indian passport after acquisition of foreign citizenship constitutes an cognizable offence under the Indian Passport Act, 1967. Foreign nationals of Indian origin who have already acquired citizenship of any other country are not eligible to renounce their citizenship, as their citizenship has already been terminated under Section 9 of the Citizenship Act 1955 and are required to surrender ONLY their Indian passports to the nearest Indian Mission/Post immediately after acquisition of foreign citizenship. The applicant needs to surrender his/her Indian Passport by filling online application on Passport Seva Portal: https://mportal.passportindia.gov.in/mission/.

Documents required:

• - Duly filled application form

• - 2 Photograph

• - Copy of old/last Indian passport

• - Copy of Naturalisation certificate

• - Copy of foreign passport (if issued)

• - Address proof

(b) Renunciation of Indian nationality under Section 8 of Indian citizenship Act:

This service is applicable ONLY to Indian nationals/Indian passport holders and not for those who already hold/acquired foreign nationality. The applicant has to apply online at MHA Portal: https://indiancitizenshiponline.nic.in/Renounce. Once the citizenship renunciation certificate is issued, the applicant is to surrender his Indian passport as per above procedure. The fees and other detailed instruction are given in the above webportal.

Note:  While filling the application for renunciation certificate online, the following documents are mandatory to be uploaded:

1.       - Copy of existing Indian passport (first and last page)

2.       - Copy of last cancelled passport (first and last page)

3.       - Address Proof
