Shri S. Koventhan Consul General of India

Prior to assuming charge as the Consul General of India in Johannesburg on 11 June 2026, he served as Joint Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs, New Delhi in the Passport Seva Programme Division.

In his earlier diplomatic assignments, he had worked in Indian Missions abroad in Lisbon (Portugal), Brasilia (Brazil), Thimphu (Bhutan) in various capacities handling Political, Economic, Commercial, Consular, Administration, Development Cooperation among others.

In his stint in the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), New Delhi, he served as the Director in Passport Seva Programme Division. As the Project Director, he had overseen the implementation of PSP Version 2.0 and roll-out of E-passports and had also successfully implemented the project both in India and in Indian Missions/Posts abroad. Notably, PSP Version 2.0 had won two National Level E-governance awards in January 2026.

During the period July 2021- August 2024, he served as the Regional Passport Officer in Chennai. During this time, he had implemented several citizen friendly initiatives like " Chat with RPO" (WhatsApp Video Chat with passport applicants), "Meet with RPO" , setting up of a help desk for citizens called " May I help you" and creation of an " Integrated Public Grievance Centre" to handle pubic grievances record through modes. He also held the additional charge of Head of MEA Branch Secretariat in Chennai during January- August 2024.

Shri. S. Koventhan is a Mining Engineering graduate from College of Engineering, Guindy, Chennai.

He is married to Ms. Vibhuti, who is a fitness enthusiast and they have a son.

He speaks Portuguese apart from English, Hindi and Tamil.
