Indian Naval Ships Kolkata and Tarkash are scheduled to visit Simons Town from 1st to 13th October 2018. Kolkata, the lead ship of the Project 15A class is the first stealth destroyer to be built in India. With an overall length of 164 metres and displacing about 7500 tons, Kolkata has been conceived and designed by the Indian Navy’s Design Directorate and built by M/s Mazagon Dock Shipyard Limited, Mumbai. Kolkata not only heralds a new class of naval ships that combine stealth, strength, manoeuvrability, survivability and crew comfort but also marks a major step towards indigenisation.

Tarkash is the part of the Talwar-class frigates built at the Yantar shipyard in Kaliningrad, Russia for Indian Navy. Armed with state art sensors and weapon systems and with an overall length of 125 metres and displacing about 4000 tons, Tarkash is one of the most advanced Frigates in Indian Navy’s arsenal. Both ships belong to the Western Naval Fleet based at Mumbai.

The ships will exercise with the Brazilian and South African Navy in the coming days. The visit of the ships further strengthens the deep bonds of cooperation and friendship between India, Brazil and South Africa especially in the field of naval cooperation.
